Anushka Sharma has boldly opened up about the horrible sexism that exists in the Bollywood industry.
In an interview with film critic Anupama Chopra, Anushka said that women in Bollywood are only required to look good and ?interesting? in a film, The Express Tribune reports. However, she said that once an actress lose her looks, she loses contracts for the films, which is not the case with male actors.
The gutsy actress revealed that it is more difficult for an actress to enter films compared to actors also that men are paid more than women. She said that if any actress does a film, in which her role is superior to the male actor?s, none of the guys will do that role. On the other hand, the Bombay Velvet actress did say that male actors also have to face a lot of pressure in Bollywood as they are under pressure to make 100 crore films.
In a revealing interview, actress Anushka Sharma talked about all that is wrong inBollywood for women. Hollywood actresses Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep did not blink even once before they spoke out about the wide wage gap between men and women in the industry. Anushka too seems to have followed the same suit in a recent interview with film critic Anupama Chopra.
Anushka speaks out about the discrimination she faces as an actress in the industry, how a male newcomer and a female newcomer will be paid differently and how she is called a bi*ch for speaking her mind.
The following are important takeaways from the interview:
1) "Girls are just expected to be good looking, look nice...enough interesting for a guy to fall in love with you in the film....it is reflective of Indian society."
2) "Men can work as long as they want to, even if they have aged. They are still heroes, still super heroes, they are still amazing and cool.... but why is it that women are only okay till they are young? Only desirable?... Desirable means what? Desirable has sexual connotation attached to it. And we're looking at women like that in films, because we have only shown mostly that to people, barring a few films that have happened."
3) "On an outdoor schedule, you know that the guy is going to get a bigger bedroom than you."
4) "My parents never discriminated between me and my brother when I was growing up. I only felt the discrimination after I became an actress."
5) "People don't like women with guts in this industry... I am not an activist, it's just what I want to do. But it is looked at as 'Hmm..Bada bann rahi hai.. bohot bol rahi hai' "
6) "You know what, we are all so lucky that we live in India because the taste is so mediocre that we are all stars...We all should know that....We are not pushing ourselves, we are not getting enough opportunities."
7) "If you are asking for something you think you deserve, you are a bitch. 'Isko Kitna attitude Hai'....We are not dumb, we have not come so far in life not by being stupid, not by being floozies. All the actresses in the industry are intelligent."
8) "A female newcomer and a male newcomer will get paid differently. You are a newcomer! Nobody knows who you are. Man-woman doesn't matter...It is just assumed that man needs more money."
9) "At the end of the day you want respect, when you pay less money, you are basically saying you are not that valuable."
10) "If I am doing a film in which my role might be a little more than a guy, I know for a fact none of the guys will do it."
11) "There is pressure on men too...they 'have' to make a 100-crore film. To keep 100 crore as a benchmark for film, you are corrupting the system.... That is why people say it is easier for women to take risks, no one is expecting anything of them anyway."
